Cet homme de loi, am\u00e9ricain, pr\u00e9tendait \u00eatre l\u2019inventeur de l\u2019automobile, il attendait ainsi que chaque constructeur lui reverse des royalties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">De chaque c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l\u2019Atlantique, la conqu\u00eate automobile fut men\u00e9e \u00e0 un rythme soutenu au d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle. Et pourtant, George B. Selden a bien failli faire capoter cette industrie naissante. C\u2019est en fait l\u2019histoire d\u2019une arnaque. Une magnifique arnaque tant par l\u2019ampleur des d\u00e9g\u00e2ts que de sa relative simplicit\u00e9. Homme de loi, George Selden \u00e9tait tout simplement parvenu en fouillant les brevets \u00e0 en trouver les faiblesses, puis \u00e0 les maquiller afin qu\u2019il se retrouve sur le papier l\u2019inventeur de l\u2019automobile de part le brevet Selden n\u00b0549160 datant du 5 novembre 1895. <\/p>\n<h2>Convaincre les fabricants du bon droit<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dans le texte, il est mention de \u00ab<em> la combinaison, sur une locomotive routi\u00e8re, \u00e9quip\u00e9e d\u2019un train de roulement convenable avec roues motrices et direction, d\u2019un moteur \u00e0 compression \u00e0 hydrocarbure, comprenant un ou plusieurs cylindres, un r\u00e9servoir \u00e0 carburant, un arbre de transmission con\u00e7u pour tourner plus vite que les roues motrices, un syst\u00e8me de d\u00e9brayage et une carrosserie convenable adapt\u00e9e au transport des personnes et des marchandises <\/em>\u00bb. Mais l\u2019ann\u00e9e 1895 ne suffisait pas pour faire de Selden l\u2019inventeur de l\u2019automobile. Si bien que l\u2019escroc est parvenu \u00e0 convaincre l\u2019industrie que le d\u00e9p\u00f4t de ce brevet datait en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 du 8 mai 1879, 16 ans plus t\u00f4t ! De fait, ce brevet qui devait tomber dans l\u2019oubli devenait la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En association avec le Pr\u00e9sident d\u2019un compagnie factice, la Electric Vehicle Company de George Day, Selden d\u00e9clencha les hostilit\u00e9s en 1899 en attaquant pour contre-fa\u00e7on la Winton Motor Carriage Company avec succ\u00e8s apr\u00e8s jugement le 20 mars 1903. Devant la peur de la jurisprudence, la concurrence plia devant le brevet Selden avec le versement de 5% du chiffre d\u2019affaire. Le \u00ab Racket Selden \u00bb voit le jour. <\/p>\n<h2>L\u2019Europe au secours de Ford<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Comme souvent dans les arnaques, c\u2019est la volont\u00e9 d\u2019amasser toujours plus qui conduit \u00e0 se faire prendre. L\u2019association de George Day et Goerge B. Selden (Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers ou ALAM) ne reconnait que les constructeurs affili\u00e9s. Face \u00e0 l\u2019augmentation d\u2019une production contr\u00f4l\u00e9, les royalties passent \u00e0 1,25%, puis 1% du chiffre d\u2019affaire, mais bien des dents grincent. \u00c0 commencer par celles de Henry Ford vex\u00e9 que l\u2019association ne reconnaisse que les constructeurs n\u00e9s avant sa cr\u00e9ation (1899 contre 1903 pour Ford). En ce d\u00e9but de si\u00e8cle, chaque automobile porte sur son ch\u00e2ssis le sceau du brevet Selden. Mais en Europe, les constructeurs allemands et fran\u00e7ais n\u2019entendent pas s\u2019acquitter de pharamineux droits d\u2019entr\u00e9e. Au point que chez Panhard, Jeantaud ou Levassor, on pense qu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019un bluff \u00e9hont\u00e9. Une l\u00e9gion d\u2019avocats examina alors tous les brevets ant\u00e9rieurs \u00e0 celui de Selden et la preuve de l\u2019arnaque fut ainsi mise au grand jour en 1903. Sauf que la proc\u00e9dure dura pr\u00e8s de 9 ans avec un jugement d\u00e9finitif le 12 novembre 1912. Les frais de justice cout\u00e8rent 100 000 dollars de l\u2019\u00e9poque \u00e0 l\u2019ALAM conduisant \u00e0 la disparition m\u00eame de l\u2019association.
